At GeneGoCell, we believe that advancing biotechnology requires more than innovative technologies and high-quality data. It also requires investing in scientists, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers who will shape the field in the years ahead.

In summer 2026, GeneGoCell welcomed students from the UC San Diego Outreach Program for Advanced Learning in STEM (OPALS) to our San Diego facility for the second consecutive year.

The UCSD OPALS program (https://iem.ucsd.edu/programs/opals/index.html) provides pre-college students with authentic, research-driven STEM experiences using real scientific data. Its participants explore interdisciplinary work spanning engineering, medicine, artificial intelligence, molecular biology, neuroscience, and other emerging areas.

The GeneGoCell visit gave students an opportunity to see how scientific knowledge is translated into biotechnology services, laboratory operations, quality systems, and business decisions, to know more about GeneGoCell’s work in genome-editing verification via next-generation sequencing and flow cytometry.

Connecting science with purpose

We began by sharing GeneGoCell’s core values:

Love. Trust. Commitment.

Students learned how these values guide our support of cell and gene therapy and precision medicine programs: from early research and assay development through IND-enabling, GxP-compliant, clinical testing.

We also discussed applications of genome-editing verification, including on- and off-target analysis, translocation and integration analysis, NGS-based clone screening, and customized bioinformatics.

One principle guided the discussion:

Good science is not only about obtaining a result. It is about producing a result that is accurate, traceable, interpretable, and suitable for the decision it will support.

During the laboratory tour, students were introduced the workflow of how samples move from receipt and tracking through testing, data analysis, technical review, and reporting.

The discussion covered laboratory safety, sample identity, chain of custody, NGS and flow cytometry workflows, quality control, documentation, personnel training and competency, bioinformatics analysis, and data integrity.

We emphasized that sophisticated instruments alone do not guarantee reliable results. High-quality biotechnology testing depends on trained people, controlled procedures, appropriate technology, and effective quality systems working together.

Biotechnology careers and entrepreneurship

The visit concluded with an interactive conversation about scientific education, industry careers, and entrepreneurship in the following topics:

We encouraged future researchers to develop not only technical expertise, but also curiosity, resilience, integrity, teamwork, and the ability to communicate complex science clearly.

Mentorship is part of scientific responsibility

Hosting UC San Diego OPALS students is one of the channels that GeneGoCell supports STEM education and the San Diego biotechnology community. It also reminds our team that mentorship and public education are essential parts of responsible biomedical community.

We thank the UC San Diego Institute of Engineering in Medicine, the OPALS leadership and coordinators, the participating students, and the GeneGoCell team members who shared their experience and perspectives.

We look forward to seeing how these future scientists, engineers, and biotechnology leaders contribute to the next generation of innovation and discovery.
